„Bucharest, Little Paris or Little Istanbul?” continues the series of „cooltural” conferences organized by the Cooltural Association Nouă Ne Pasă! and Plan Patru.
Perhaps the most frequently mentioned myth about Bucharest is its resemblance to a „Little Paris.”
For some, this cliché evokes a sense of national pride, while for others, it seems like an implausible exaggeration.
What is the true balance between fact and myth?
We invite you to a critical analysis where we will either confirm or dismantle this idea. We will explore historical images of the city—images in which, with a keen and well-guided eye, one can identify elements that contributed to this association: wide boulevards, French architects, Beaux-Arts buildings, and Parisian fashion.
In contrast, but also as a complement, we will shift our perspective and look at the city’s backstreets, open lots, inns, bay windows, ogee arches, and an „organic” urban fabric—could it be that Bucharest is more of a Little Istanbul?
The conference lecturer, architect Alexandru Buzatu, aims to analyze this myth, going beyond the superficiality of the cliché and exploring its real foundations.
