On Queen Marie’s Day, October 29, we invite you to the conference “Royal Jewelry and Attire: The Aesthetic Universe of Queen Marie,” presented by fashion historian Dr. Raluca Partenie and organized in collaboration with the Cooltural Association Nouă ne Pasă.
Queen Marie, an artistic and visionary spirit, left her mark on her era not only as a political and cultural figure, but also as one of the most elegant and original women of her time. Passionate about fashion and sumptuous jewelry, she often recorded in her diaries meticulous details about her own outfits, as well as those worn by the women in her family.
Innovative and at times even rebellious, Queen Marie built an unmistakable personal style: spectacular, unusual, almost theatrical in its creative freedom and visual impact. The Art Nouveau spirit she so deeply loved was a constant presence in her wardrobe, freely adapted during the interwar modernist period to suit her taste and temperament. The dresses that have survived—those embroidered with flowers from the 1890s and the Byzantine-inspired embroidered gowns of the interwar years—demonstrate not only her perfect alignment with international fashion avant-garde (with designers such as Charles Worth or Coco Chanel, for example), but also her direct involvement in the conception of her garments.
A true ambassador of Romanian culture, she wore the traditional Romanian costume with passion, elevating it to the category of fashionable attire, not only within the country but also on the international fashion stage. Her jewelry collection—marked by a dramatic history—included exceptional pieces such as one of the largest and most famous sapphires in the world, as well as tiaras befitting her noble origins and royal status. Courted by the great Parisian designers, avidly followed by photojournalists, and featured on the covers of Mode, Time, and The New York Times, Queen Marie was not merely a follower of fashion trends, but a true creator of style. And her style indeed became history.
