The exhibition invites the public to step into the universe of Silvia Șerbescu through archival images, letters, and unpublished documents, enriched by the contemporary perspective of an augmented reality installation created by Ioana Nicoară and Sergiu Negulici.
An exceptional pianist, Silvia Șerbescu studied at the Royal Academy of Music (today the National University of Music Bucharest) with professors Emilia Sergiu and Constanţa Erbiceanu, and later in Paris at the École Normale de Musique with Lazare Lévy. Alfred Cortot, the school’s founder, described her as having “a vivid musical sense, remarkable abilities of understanding and intelligence, and already a well-formed technique, qualities that time will further develop in such a gifted artist.”
Silvia Șerbescu was a soloist of the Bucharest Philharmonic, performed on major international stages, and gave recitals alongside George Enescu, who dedicated a sonata to her in 1942 with the words: “To my remarkable partner of this evening, admiration and respect.” In 1943, she received the Cultural Merit Medal for Art, 1st Class, from King Michael of Romania, and her bust, sculpted by Gheorghe Anghel, stands at the Conservatory as a testimony for the generations of students she trained as a professor. Musicologist Iosif Sava wrote about her: “Through her ineffable charm, the captivating spontaneity of her stage presence—qualities difficult to put into words, for they stirred in listeners complex artistic emotions—Silvia Șerbescu remains a distinct and exceptional voice within modern Romanian pianism.”
The exhibition is part of the Silvia Șerbescu Festival, an event dedicated to classical music, heritage, and cultural education, organized by the cultural association Aici A Stat, marking 60 years since the pianist’s passing.
